Novos Bares de Praia / New Beach Bars

Conceição Cabrita, a nova presidente da Câmara Municipal de Vila Real de Santo António, anunciou que “A obra de requalificação da Praia de Monte Gordo avança a bom ritmo, prevendo-se a abertura dos primeiros apoios de praia no final do mês de março. Até ao verão, a nova frente de mar deverá contar com 18 novas estruturas, momento em que ficará concluída a segunda fase da obra, que conta com investimento público e privado próximo dos doze milhões de euros”.

Conceição Cabrita, the new mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, announced that “The requalification of Monte Gordo beach is progressing at a good pace, with the first beach bars and restaurants expected to open at the end of March. By the summer, the new sea front will have 18 new structures, at which time the second phase of the work will be completed, with public and private investment close to 12 million euros.”

Participating National Teams (both male and female) in the 2018 edition: Germany, Italy, Netherlands, and Portugal.

A demolição dos antigos bares de praia em Monte Gordo já começou – a Câmara Municipal de Vila Real de Santo António tinha exigido que começasse a partir do dia 15 de novembro de 2017. As novas infraestruturas serão mais bonitas e amigas do ambiente, de modo a facilitar a preservação das dunas e da fauna circundante. Espera-se que os novos bares estejam em funcionamento por volta de março de 2018. Aqui ficam umas fotos das demolições em curso.

The demolition of the old beach bars in Monte Gordo has already started – the city hall of Vila Real de Santo Antonio demanded it to begin on November 15th. The news infrastructures will be more pleasant to the eye and environmentally friendly so as to facilitate the preservation of the sand dunes and surrounding fauna. The new bares are expected to be up and running around March 2018. Here are some pictures of the on going demolitions.

Ingrid Bergman vacationed in Monte Gordo right after recording “Hedda Gabler” in 1963.  As the Hollywood diva that she was, she wore a more provocative bikini for those times and got a ticket!! –  of about 12 euros in today’s money. Electronic-only paid highways in Portugal

Are you planning to drive around Portugal and explore its wonders? If so, be aware that there are some highways that you can only pay with a predetermined wireless payment system of your choice – these include a small number of roads (though one of them is A22, the main highway in Algarve). You do not want to be caught off guard because then you may end up being charged relatively hefty fees.portagem 1There are several options you can choose from: Easytoll, Tollcard, Tollservice, or Temporary Via Verde Device. Briefly, Easytoll associates your vehicle plate with a credit card, Tollcard is a prepaid ticket service, Tollservice is a 20 euros prepaid ticket with unlimited use for 3 days, and Temporary Via Verde Device is a short-term subscription contract. Also note that “these products are only valid for roads with electronic-only tolls”. Click here for detailed information from the official website (in several languages: PT, EN, FR, ES).

More, there is a fifth option that is applicable only to vehicles with Portuguese plates (e.g. rental car): ATM payment. To use this last option you need to get an ATM reference number online from the post office website (CTT), 48 hours after you used the highway. Then you go to any ATM terminal and use the “other services” option in their menu to process the payment using the reference number for your toll bill. You can read more details by clicking here.

We recommend you consider the fees your credit card provider charges for international transactions when deciding which option is best for you (e.g. the prepaid option may end up having a lower total cost).

You can enroll on these services at the airport or at the road border. If renting a vehicle, make sure to ask your rent-a-car provider for details about how they can service you on this matter. Lastly, know that in Portugal any road with an A# (e.g. A1) is a paid highway. More, road quality can be usually assessed by their terminology, in the following order (best to worst): A#, IP#, IC#, N#.
